What is Seonmudo?
Seonmudo is a distinctive Korean martial art combining meditation, yoga, breathing exercises and dynamic movement. Its roots trace back to Buddhist temples in Korea, where it was developed as a holistic practice balancing body and mind. Seonmudo means “Zen martial arts” and focuses not only on physical strength but on mental clarity and spiritual growth.
Why choose Seonmudo?
Seonmudo is more than a martial art — it is a way of living. By combining meditative technique with physical movement it helps you:
- Improve physical health: Build strength, flexibility and balance through flowing movement and precise exercises.
- Strengthen mental health: Mindfulness and meditation sit at the centre of Seonmudo, reducing stress and sharpening focus.
- Find harmony: Combine breath, movement and meditation to settle both body and mind.
Who can train Seonmudo?
Seonmudo is for everyone — regardless of age, gender or fitness. It is a gentle but effective practice that adapts to individual needs. Whether you are looking for a meditative practice or a physical challenge, Seonmudo has something for you.
Training and tradition
Training in Seonmudo rests on centuries of tradition from Korean Buddhist temples. The exercises range from slow, meditative movement to explosive, powerful techniques that test your strength and agility. It is a journey towards balance and wholeness — physical and spiritual alike.
Seonmudo alongside yoga
Already keen on yoga and looking for a way to extend your practice? Seonmudo offers a way to combine the calm and flexibility of yoga with the power and dynamism of a martial art.
Where yoga finds stillness in rest, Seonmudo teaches you to find it in motion.
How does Seonmudo differ from yoga?
- More movement, more strength: Where yoga focuses on postures and static stretching, Seonmudo adds dynamic sequences and martial movement.
- Meditation in action: Rather than finding calm in stillness, you learn mindfulness through movement both slow and fast.
- The power of breath: Seonmudo goes deeper into breathing technique, making it central to every movement.
If you love yoga, you will find Seonmudo sharpens your body awareness, introduces a meditative practice with a new dynamic dimension, and draws on the deep spiritual heritage of Korean Buddhism.
Seonmudo for martial artists
If you have experience in a martial art such as karate or taekwondo, you already know the value of discipline, focus and physical strength. But what if you could build on those skills while going deeper into the spiritual side of training?
How does Seonmudo differ from karate and taekwondo?
- Meditation and mindfulness: Where many martial arts focus on technique and competition, Seonmudo emphasises inner calm and spiritual growth.
- Flowing movement: Soft, harmonious sequences balance explosive techniques with calmer, almost dance-like movement.
- Breath and energy: A focus on breathing lets you control your energy more precisely and connect body and mind.
Seonmudo rests on centuries of temple tradition and is not only about fighting — it is a journey towards understanding yourself and the world around you.
Golgulsa — where Seonmudo comes from
Seonmudo has its home at Golgulsa, the temple in the mountains near Gyeongju in South Korea. This is where the art has been kept alive and handed on, and where it reached the rest of the world from.
Seonbae Dojang has close ties to Golgulsa, and we travel to Korea to train where the art belongs. These are not sightseeing trips — it is training inside the temple’s own setting, at the temple’s own pace.
